We completed the build of Mol Bàn in 2009. It was one of the first SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) buildings in the Western Isles. The walls, ceiling and floors were all delivered ready insulated to a high standard with large areas of argon filled double glazing providing wonderful views but also keeping in the heat and providing a good deal of solar gain. Heating is via an air source heat pump – for domestic hot water, underfloor heating and upstairs radiators. We have extended the life of our beautiful mid-century furniture (mostly Ercol) through re-upholstering.

We have tried to encourage local flora and fauna by leaving some parts of the garden to their own devices. Snipe and curlew have taken advantage and as well as the ‘usual’ array of bird species – gulls, eagles, herons, buzzards, ravens, blackbirds, goldfinches, wheatears, cuckoos etc etc - we have recently seen sparrow hawks and merlins.  

Our home is a croft in the village where our approach to the land is one of re-wilding, tree planting and preservation of peat bogs.

We are continually striving to improve Mol Bàn and its environmental impact. Our next step will be to deploy a renewable energy source.
